Wandsworth Tournoi report

the shaman with the trophy
The Shaman kicks off the
One More Beer campaign

22 July 2007

Renaissance have claimed their first piece of silverware following victory in the 2007 Wandsworth Tournoi. The one day event brought together the cream of local talent from South London and pitted Renaissance against three rivaling squads.

Renaissance proved to have too much quality and experience against a largely young batch of players, and this victory has given them a huge confidence boost for the remainder of the Top Corner league.

Due to injuries and unavailability, Renaissance had to draft in some extra players to help mount their challenge. Dave 'Sanchez' Hetherington and Andy Bajcar proved more than able replacements.

In a series of round robin games, Renaissance went up against old rivals LMP, the White Lions, and the Blue Bandits. Victory in two of the three matches would guarantee a place in the final.

The White Lions were duely dispatched with a comfortable three nil win in the first match. Next up was the Bandits. They provided a sterner test initially, but eventually fell away in a 4-0 defeat. The pick of the goals came from a thunderous strike by Hetherington Snr, who surely took the goal of the tournament award.

Knowing that their place in the final was assured, Renaissance went into the game with LMP knowing that a victory would eliminate Daniel Martin's outfit. A tough game was played out with typcial gusto and passion. With minutes to spare, Michael Angelo scored a priceless winner (having just missed a ludicroulsy positioned penalty, much closer to the half way line than the area!)

So to the final. Not for the first time in the day, the heavens opened and the rain lashed down. Renaissance faced the Blue Bandits again, and goals from Bajcar and The Artist saw off an improved gutsy performance from the youngsters.

Sweet victory. Renaissance were presented with medals and the Wandsworth Cup in a short presentation at the finish. Once hopes that this will be the first of many a trophy.
