Judgement looms...
28 March 2007
The Round Up just finished reading The Complete Works of Brothers Grimm including the oft-told stories of Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and Rapunzel. But there remains one final grim tale that needs re-telling one more time and it goes a little something like this...
Once upon a time on Haverstock Hill, two teams battled each other for league glory, a magnificent trophy, and more adulation than you could shake a stick at. In the blue corner -- Renaissance, much loved, coveted, and adored by their one admirer. And in the red corner, the snarling but misunderstood beast, Recreativo.
To cut a dreadfully long story short Renaissance were vanquished and Recreativo crowned champions. Fast forward to March 2007 and not much has changed since. In fact, Recreativo's supremacy over Renaissance is so emphatic: (3 wins, 0 defeats, 10 goals scored, 3 conceded) that they usually notch up a couple of goals in the time it takes to spell the name Rumpelstiltskin.
Nonetheless, it was a surprise to hear Recreativo spokesman Jordi Bejar attempt to get his excuses in early. "A few of us won't be able to play you," he said supressing a snigger. "Injuries and business trips..." he tried to elaborate before his voice was drowned out by Iberia Flight 3028A roaring overhead into Heathrow with a one Señor Martinez Luis Enrique onboard.
The truth of the matter is that despite all the hullabaloo and hot air which has accompanied the build up to this game it's not really Judgement Day at all. A Renaissance victory tonight will give them one hand on the league title; a defeat will raise the temperature and make the league tastier than a house made from sweet bread and cakes.
Tales from the Brothers Grimm usually had a happy ending, except the anticlimactic Snow White (one girl, seven dwarfs, c'mon!). Renaissance will aim to start a new chapter against Recreativo on a happier note.
Lineups:
Renaissance: Masaccio; Brunelleschi; Rembrandt, Col; The Artist, Verrocchio; Cartman
And here's Recreativo's team:
Jordi Bejar; Jon Iturriaga, Jon Morello; Kevin Rodriguez, Jon "Sangre Vasca" Uriarte; Juan Pablo Rud, Alvaro Martinez Calcerrada.
