Renaissance on vacation in end of season thrashing

Renaissance 0 - 4 Venezuela
26 April 2007

Colin Presly

Renaissance have gone out on a very low note tonight against Venezuela at Haverstock. Although the league had long flown the nest, Renaissance still had the chance to finish third, and end their campaign with a modicum of pride. Instead, they performed in a manner which befitted a last game of the season, and were soundly battered.

The game started rather evenly. Both sides enjoyed a fair share of the ball, but little was created. As it stood, one could maybe see a 0-0 on the cards. Sadly for Renaissance, this was as good as it got. Soon enough, Venezuela stepped up a level, and the men in blue could not follow them.

At half time, Venezuela were 2-0 up. Both goals came from sheer Venezuela dedication. They were first to the 50-50's and their passing moves were beginning to pay off. Masaccio was left exposed on both occassions. HT 2-0.

With the start of the second half, Renaissance slipped further into darkness, as Venezuela attacked at will. If it wasn't for the efforts of Masaccio, Renaissance may have let in a hatfull. Going forward, Renaissance were limp and predictable. Reduced to speculative long shots, most moves failed to get off the ground.

Renaissance by now looked a sorry outfit, going through the motions. Venezuela moved in for the kill. With space opening up in a patched up rear guard, the score was soon 4-0. The end of the game couldn't come sooner enough for Renaissance.

With the minutes ticking on, even a consolation goal proved to be a bridge too far for Renaissance. Venezuela must have expected more from a Renaissance team that they had not hitherto managed to beat. At full time, they must have felt cheated at only getting the four.

Where do Renaissance go from here? That is the question of the night. If they are to leave Haverstock and Top Corner, then they will go with their tails firmly between their legs. Perhaps the only real course of action is to start again in a new location. This could prove to be the tonic for the rebirth of the club.
