28 June 2007

Colin Presly

Renaissance have unleashed a barnstorming performance tonight, coming from behind to defeat Venezuela at Haverstock Hill. In a match that displayed all the intensity and passion that has become a hallmark of this fixture, the men in blue rose to the occasion and took all the spoils.

Richard "Megatron" Murphy made his long awaited debut tonight, linking up with new teamates The Artist, The Realist and Scholesey, in a very attacking quartet. At the other end, Masaccio made a return in goal, having missed last week's victory against FremantleMedia.

Renaissance have unleashed a barnstorming performance tonight, coming from behind to defeat Venezuela at Haverstock Hill. In a match that displayed all the intensity and passion that has become a hallmark of this fixture, the men in blue rose to the occasion and took all the spoils.

Richard '"Megatron" Murphy made his long awaited debut tonight, linking up with new teamates The Artist, The Realist and Scholesey, in a very attacking quartet. At the other end, Masaccio made a return in goal, having missed last week's victory against FremantleMedia.

Following heavy rain in the London area prior to kick off, the pitch was not in its best shape. Both teams had to adjust their play to suit the conditions. This added another dimension to an already captivating encounter.

As predicted, the game started at a frantic pace. Both sides showed their aggressive nature, and the desire to win every fifty-fifty challenge. It was Venezuela who were to take the lead, in a very controversial manner. Despite a midfielder clearly handling the ball mid flight during a tussle, the ref allowed play to continue. Subsequently, the player raced past the Artist and finished smartly. Any Renaissance pleas fell on deaf ears, as the game restarted with Renaissance 1-0 down.

Not to be disheartened by this setback, Renaissance soon bounced back with a wonderful passing move that earned them a deserved equaliser. Debutant Megatron got the ball and watched the forward run of substitute Cartman. He played in a killer pass to the German, who turned well and slotted the ball into the right hand corner of the net. Venezuela could do nothing but watch. 1-1.

At this point the game began to turn in the favour of Renaissance. Venezuela could not deal with the quick passing of The Artist, Megatron, Scholesey and Cartman. With about four minutes remaining of the first half, Renaissance took the lead. Scholesey's clever movement allowed him to leave a marker and advance on goal. He made no mistake with his finish. 2-1 H/T.

The game became very tight again in the second half. A couple of minor chances were created by both sides, but in truth, both team's rearguards were on top form. With the minutes ticking on, Renaissance brought on Rembrandt and Michael Angelo, as they searched for the goal that would surely grant them the three points. Michael Angelo was his lively self, and Rembrandt added further steel to the midfield.

It took a vital goalkeeping error for Renaissance to finally get a third goal. After a series of challenges, the ball found its way to Cartman on the left hand edge of the area. His shot managed to get the better of the Venezuela stopper and bounce into the net. Cue sighs of relief from Renaissance, as they had at last put the game to bed. 3-1. Right at the death, Michael Angelo almost extended his team's advantage, but he sent his shot over the bar.

Renaissance have again raised their performance levels tonight in a key game. This is just the sort of build up that the blues need before they face their bete-noire - Recreativo.
