FC Warne 1 - 10 Renaissance
22 August 2007
Colin Presly
In their penultimate game of the Top Corner Haverstock season, Renaissance have romped to a 10-1 win against FC Warne. Knowing that they were playing for second place in the league, Renaissance turned on the style with a club record victory.
A five goal haul from Megatron, a hat-trick from The Artist, a Da Vinci penalty, and a token goal from forgotten man Keano have swept the plucky Aussie oufit away.
On a wet and windy night more akin to the middle of February than the end of August, the blues put on the kind of peformance that champions display. Sadly, as we all know, they have fallen just short of this accolade.
The game came to life from the off. Within a few minutes Renaissance were in the lead. Inform striker Megatron got things going when his shot had too much precision and power for the Warne custodian. But almost immediately, Warne equalised. A strong run from the midfield was left unchecked, and with a strong challenge not forthcoming, the player found his way through on goal. Masaccio was left hopelessly exposed and could do nothing about the finish. 1-1.
From a neutral's perspective it looked a case of ''game on''. But what followed was almost complete Renaissance domination until the final whistle. Megatron soon grabbed a second, following good work from The Realist. The Artist then made it 3-1, when he picked up Megatron's pass on the right wing, and finished smartly into the bottom left hand corner. A cool Da Vinci penalty with about five minutes of the half to go ensured that Renaissance were well on top at 4-1.
Masaccio had little to do in this period but was called upon to save well right on the stroke of half time. 4-1 HT.
The score board continued to change in Renaissance's favour, as Warne's spirit began to fade. Megatron and The Artist continued to be a deadly combination in the second half grabbing another five goals between them. In the middle of this scoring rout, Keano got a piece of the action. His powerful and direct run on goal left the Warne backline in pieces. He finished clinically.
It would be easy for a winning defence to switch off when all is going so well at the other end of the pitch. But Renaissance did not fall into this trap, and kept the door firmly shut. Masaccio made another fine save as Warne looked to restore a modicum of pride. However, they were not able to add to their solitary goal, and thus end their campaign on a low note. FT 10-1.
Next week Renaissance face Recreativo in their final league game. Although they cannot take top spot, the boys can still try to complete an impressive double over their Spanish adversary.
