Renaissance 5-2 Warne FC
11 July 2007
Colin Presly
Renaissance have made it five wins in a row tonight, but boy were they made to work for their victory. Although they eventually hit five past their determined Aussie opponents, the blues were also guilty of missing a shed load of chances. The Artist got back in the goals with a vital hatrick, Megatron added another strike, and Michaelangelo got his first for the campaign.
The team welcomed back Scholesey into the starting VII, and with Masaccio unavailable, coach Ken Umeh reprised his role as Xaufrus between the sticks.
Not being able to start tonight's game with the same intensity as last week's clash with Recreativo, Renaissance looked sluggish and unfocused in the early period of the game. Warne's physical 'up and at them' style gave them alot of joy, and they soon took a surprise lead when a defensive mix up allowed a forward a free shot from close range. He made no mistake.
This setback helped to serve as a wake up call, as Renaissance realised that they needed to improve. Cartman lead the way with two strikes, unfortunately hitting the post on both occasions. The Artist grabbed a fortunate equaliser for Renaissance, when his shot squirmed through the fingers of the Warne custodian. As the half progressed, Renaissance began to dominate, and following good work from substitute Dan Benn, the Artist scored a second goal, right on the stroke of half time. 2-1.
The second half began just like the end of the first half - with a goal. With the whistle blown for the second period, a Warne forward attempted an audacious chip from the centre spot. Amazingly, the shot had perfect flight and sailed over Xawfrus, leaving him and the rest of Renaissance perplexed.
Renaissance now had to step up their game again, if they didn't want to have 'one of those days'. Following another Renaissance attack, a Warne defender appeared to stray into the area, while attempting to clear the ball. A penalty was awarded, and The Artist, already with a brace to his name, cooly slotted home. 3-2.
By now Warne were beginning to tire, and gaps were opening up all over the park. Sadly for Renaissance, they just could not put the game to bed. Megatron was brought back on, along with Michaelangelo, as Renaissance went fot the jugular. The Realist, another second half substitute would have liked to have done better when he was put through on similar occasions.
With about four minutes remaining, Renaissance scored the killer goal. Michaelangelo used his strength to create a bit of space and fire beyound the reaches of the keeper. Megatron added the team's fifth with a well hit shot into the corner, as Warne's rearguard resistance finally caved in. FT 5-2.
It was not pretty or indeed memorable, but Renaissance have got the job done tonight. At the league's half way stage, it is all to play for. A break in the league next week allows the blues to compete in a one day tournament in Wandsworth. Here's hoping that when the team returns to Haverstock, they bring their 'A' game with them.
