Renaissance shoot down champions to make statement of intent

Renaissance 2-1 Recreativo de Londres
5 July 2007

Colin Presly

Renaissance have split the title race wide open tonight with a tremendous display against reigning champs Recreativo De Londres. Two class goals from Megatron and a plethora of top notch performances have allowed Renaissance to go joint top with Recreativo, and finally get one over their illustrious rivals.

In the build up to this epic encounter, both sides displayed classic mind games in order to distract each other. Speculation that Jordi, Recreativo's goalkeeper, would not feature was as expected, untrue. Renaissance chose to play possum, and unleash their full force when the game began. They sure did. With both Dan Benn and Scholesey missing, Brunelleschi returned to the starting VII.

Things could not have started better for Renaissance. Within a few minutes they were one nil up. After a tough midfield encounter, the ball found its way to Megatron. Turning well, and using his pace to his advantage, the striker took an early shot which bounced directly in front of the Recreativo stopper, and beat him into the corner.

Recreativo were left shell shocked, but could not find a way back into the game. The tactics that Renaissance deployed worked perfectly. Key Recreativo players were unable to enjoy the domination that they had come accustomed to.

With things going all their way, Renaissance upped the ante. Megatron made it 2-0, with a sublime goal. Picking up the ball, he cleverly dinked it over a Recreativo player and moved around him. Finding himself on the edge of the area, he had enough time to slot the ball beyound the reaches of an exposed Jordi. 2-0 HT.

It was clear though that even at this stage, the game was still alive, and that Renaissance would have to maintain their discipline and workrate. Well timed substitutions helped to share the job, and with The Shaman and Brunelleschi in top form, Recreativo soon began to run out of ideas. Reduced to speculative shots, Recreativo seemed consigned to their fate. But just to make the last few minutes more interesting, the Spaniards pulled one goal back, and Masaccio was denied a clean sheet. FT 2-1.

The satisfaction of beating Recreativo was clear to see from all associated with Renaissance. But despite the magnitude of this result, minds must remain focused on the next game. Make no mistake though, Renaissance mean business.
